Safe Storage Notice is intended to help parents, guardians, and gun owners comply with the new secure storage requirements.

Beginning October 1, 2025, and every October 1 thereafter, all public, intermediate, and nonpublic schools must distribute a state-approved Safe Storage Notice annually to the parents or legal guardians of each enrolled student (as required by HB 5451 / MCL 380.1313b). 

Michigan’s Secure Firearm Storage Law

Michigan’s secure storage law (Public Act 17 of 2023), effective February 13, 2024, requires individuals to keep unattended weapons unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is likely to be present on the premises.
