Millington Community Schools Receives $500 Grant from Tuscola County Community Foundation to Enhance Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Program

MILLINGTON, November  17,  2023 — Millington Community Schools is delighted to announce the receipt of a $500 grant from the Tuscola County Community Foundation. The funds will be utilized to further strengthen the school's Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program by acquiring rewards that will positively reinforce and recognize students' exemplary behavior.

PBIS is a proactive approach to cultivating a positive school environment by emphasizing and teaching behavioral expectations. This evidence-based framework promotes a school-wide culture of respect, responsibility, and safety. Millington Community Schools has been a dedicated participant in the PBIS initiative, and the recent grant from the Tuscola County Community Foundation will significantly contribute to its success.

About PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a system-wide framework designed to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. The key components of PBIS include:

1. Behavioral Expectations: Clearly defined behavioral expectations are established and communicated throughout the school community. These expectations create a common language for discussing and reinforcing positive behavior.

2. Teaching and Reinforcing: Students are explicitly taught the expected behaviors, and positive behaviors are consistently reinforced. This proactive approach aims to prevent behavioral issues before they occur.

3. Data-Driven Decision-Making:  PBIS relies on data collection and analysis to make informed decisions. This involves tracking behavior incidents, recognizing positive behaviors, and adjusting strategies based on the data.

4. Tiered System of Support: PBIS provides a tiered system of support to meet the varying needs of students. It includes universal strategies for all students, targeted interventions for those at risk, and intensive support for students with significant behavioral challenges.

5. Recognition and Rewards: Acknowledging and rewarding positive behavior is a fundamental aspect of PBIS. By doing so, the program reinforces the desired behaviors and fosters a positive school climate.

The grant from the Tuscola County Community Foundation will allow Millington Community Schools to invest in rewards that align with the principles of PBIS. These rewards will be distributed to students who consistently exhibit positive behavior, contributing to a school culture that values and celebrates respectful, responsible, and safe conduct.

The Tuscola County Community Foundation's generosity reflects a shared commitment to the well-being and development of the community's youth. Millington Community Schools is immensely grateful for this support, as it enables the continued enhancement of the PBIS program and the positive impact it has on the lives of our students.
